Joaquin's Dall'Isola is a rare gem. A project since 2009 by Raffaele Pagano, aka The Docter, to revitalise some lost vineyards (some pre-phylloxera) in Anacapri on the island of Capri. The result is a total of around 600 bottles a year of this fantastic field blend of the grapes Falanghina, Greco, Biancolella and the local Ciunchesa.
Joaquin's Dall'Isola is fluorescent straw yellow in colour with golden reflections.
In the nose, intense aromas of flowers and white fruits, such as peach and apricot, followed by a hint of citrus fruit, notes of chamomile and a mineral touch.
In the mouth rich, aromatic and harmonious with lively acidity, a firm body and slightly saline, lingering finish.
Because the wine is made using ancient techniques, it is different every year. An expression of the year and the climate.
Ideal foodpairing:
The Joaquin Dall'Isola is made 'in the sea' and therefore goes wonderfully with fish dishes, lobster and other seafood.
Joaquin's Dall'Isola is a unique project Raffaele Pagano, aka The Docter. In 2009, he travelled to the island of Capri, in the Gulf of Naples, to revitalise some ancient and lost grapes and vineyards (some pre-phylloxera). This is where Raffaele got the nickname 'the Docter'.
In the vineyards in Anacapri, the grapes Falanghina, Greco, Biancolella and the native Ciunchesa (an ancient Greco clone) grow interchangeably in what is known as a field blend. This was the way vineyards were planted in ancient times. Should one grape do poorly in a given year, at least they still had the other grape varieties to make wine from.
The grapes are harvested by hand in October and then transported to the winery in Montefalcione. To do this, Raffaele rents the only ferry between Capri and the mainland every year.
After gentle pressing, the wine is fermented in large glass bellows, following the island's ancient methods, and the must soaks on the skins for a short time. The wine then matures for several months in stainless steel tanks. Further ageing takes place after bottling.
About 600 bottles of the Dall'Isola are made every year. A rare icon for good reason.
