Tua Rita

Suvereto, Toscana

The name Tua Rita is simply founder Rita Tua's own name spelled backwards – a sign of how personal this estate has remained. What began in 1984 as a modest two-hectare vineyard in Tuscany's Metalliferous Hills grew into one of Italy's most celebrated "garage wines".

Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio Bisti bought an estate near Suvereto in 1984, originally intending to live there and run a small farm. Their passion for wine soon took over: within a decade the vineyard grew from two to nine hectares, reaching twenty around the turn of the century. After Virgilio's death in 2010, daughter Simena took over, together with her husband Stefano Frascolla, who represents the estate as owner and managing director; the third generation, son Giovanni Frascolla, is now involved as well. The estate today covers sixty hectares.

Suvereto lies in the Val di Cornia, on the Tuscan coast just south of better-known Bolgheri, and like its neighbour is known for Bordeaux-style blends grown on clay-and-pebble soils. Tua Rita has farmed its vineyards – around Notri, in the hills above Suvereto – organically since completing its conversion between 2009 and 2017, under winemaker Marco Lamastra.

The result is concentrated, modern wines with a firm structure: from the approachable Rosso dei Notri to Redigaffi, one of Italy's most decorated Merlots.
