Verruzzo 2022

Monteverro

DruivenMerlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah

The Verruzzo 2022 is the youngest and most approachable red wine of Monteverro, named after the hill behind the estate where the wild boar (verro) has long inhabited the macchia. A deliberately more relaxed cuvée — 40% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah — organically grown and aged for twelve months in French barriques. A wine with the DNA of Monteverro and Terra di Monteverro, but with a juicy, Mediterranean immediacy that makes it irresistible from the start.

  • Tasting Note Verruzzo 2022

In the glass, a deep, dark red colour with violet and purple highlights at the rim. On the nose, an inviting and lively bouquet: pomegranate and blackcurrant lead the way, followed by red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, with fine spiced nuances of bay leaf, thyme and cedar. On the palate, a fresh and powerful entry, supported by juicy acidity and vibrant red and black fruit. The mid-palate is round, harmonious and well structured, with supple tannins and a light floral undertone of lilac. The finish is fresh, fruity and refreshing, with a touch of Mediterranean spice from the Syrah. A versatile table wine for lasagne with lamb ragù, grilled light red meats, oven-roasted poultry or medium-aged cheeses.

    About this wine

Monteverro is the leading coastal estate of Julia and Georg Weber in Capalbio, in the southern Maremma. Since 2003 they have been building a reference estate for Tuscan coastal wines, with Bordeaux and Rhône varieties on stony red clay soils, just five kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea. No vineyard chemistry, biodiversity as a guiding principle, and an uncompromising approach from vineyard to bottle. Verruzzo is the youngest addition to the Monteverro range. The name — 'little wild boar' — refers to the eponymous hill behind the estate's woodland and places the wine firmly within the Monteverro family. The 2022 blend is composed of 40% Merlot for softness and juiciness, 25% Cabernet Franc for aromatic freshness, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and power, and 10% Syrah lending a light spice and Mediterranean signature. The grapes grow on clay and limestone soils with eroded stones, on vines planted at a density of 7,575 per hectare in north-south orientation. The constant sea breeze and cool nights give the fruit its characteristic Mediterranean tension. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand. Fermentation is spontaneous, with native yeasts, in stainless steel tanks — entirely gravity-driven, without the use of pumps. The wine then ages for twelve months in French oak barriques, considerably shorter than the estate's grand vins. This more restrained oak treatment preserves the vibrancy of the fruit and the distinctive Mediterranean freshness that defines Verruzzo. The wine is unfined and only lightly filtered before bottling. The result is a Monteverro wine that drinks beautifully in its youth as a 'younger sibling', yet unmistakably carries the family character: refined, balanced and saline-accented by the nearness of the sea. A distinguished table wine with good development potential through approximately 2030.
