With this conviction, Julia and Georg Weber have been building since 2003 what they envision as a Premier Grand Cru of Maremma — an Italian answer to the great names of Bordeaux.
The story of Monteverro begins with a dream and a three-year search. The German couple, passionate lovers of the great Bordeaux wines, knew exactly what they were looking for: a terroir on the Tyrrhenian coast of Tuscany with the potential to produce wines of world-class stature. They found it in 2003, in the Maremma, on three hills at the foot of the medieval village of Capalbio — just five kilometres from the sea. The estate takes its name from the wild boar (verro), which has long inhabited the surrounding macchia.
The Webers chose an uncompromising approach. From the very beginning, leading oenologists were brought on board: current winemaker Matthieu Taunay, originally from the Loire and resident in Tuscany since the inaugural harvest of 2008, and the renowned Bordeaux consultant Michel Rolland. On the hillsides, Bordeaux and Rhône varieties were planted on stony red clay soils — Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Grenache and Chardonnay. The modern cellar, partly built into the slope, operates entirely by gravity and is equipped with bespoke stainless steel tanks, concrete eggs and barriques.
Today the estate covers approximately 60 hectares across three hills, of which only 35 hectares are deliberately planted with vines — the remainder is reserved for olive groves, a natural lake fringed with ancient cork oaks, and the evergreen macchia rich with lavender, broom, rosemary and thyme. This biodiversity, combined with the constant sea breeze, cool nights and the mineral-rich red clay terroir, forms the foundation of the unmistakable Monteverro profile: precision, minerality and a striking freshness. The flagship Monteverro — a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot — is complemented by Terra di Monteverro (the second wine), the Rhône-inspired Tinata (a tribute to Georg’s mother), an exceptional coastal Chardonnay and the younger Verruzzo.
