The Monteverro 2019 is the estate's flagship wine — and in this exceptional vintage one of the great Italian wines of the decade. A Bordeaux blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, aged for twenty-four months in French barriques of which 70% are new. The estate itself speaks of 'a new chapter in our history', and the international wine press confirms it: a perfect 100/100 from Decanter, 98 points from James Suckling, 97 from Falstaff, Vinum and Veronelli, 94 from Robert Parker and an extraordinary 19+/20 from Weinwisser. In the glass, a deep, jet-black charcoal colour with magenta and lavender highlights at the rim. On the nose, an explosion of complexity: cedar and pine lead the way, followed by concentrated cassis paste, paprika, liquorice, graphite, cigar box and tobacco leaf — rounded out by fine nuances of Espelette pepper and oregano. On the palate, a soft yet refreshing entry opens onto a mineral, structured mid-palate with notes of milk chocolate, raspberry tart, black liquorice and layers of dry pine, black truffle and crushed stones. The body is grand and layered, supported by fine, concentrated tannins and an underlying tension that gives the wine its long evolution potential. The finish is exceptionally long, finely mineral and convincing. A wine for the grand table: grilled rib-eye with truffle, venison fillet with cassis sauce, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, or 36-month aged Parmigiano Reggiano.
Monteverro is the leading coastal estate of Julia and Georg Weber in Capalbio, in the southern Maremma. Since 2003 they have been building a reference estate for Tuscan coastal wines, originally conceived as an Italian answer to the great names of Bordeaux. The modern, entirely gravity-driven cellar and an uncompromising approach from vineyard to bottle have established Monteverro, in less than two decades, as one of the most respected new names on the Italian coast. The Monteverro is the flagship and the finest expression of the Capalbio terroir. The cuvée brings together the highest level from the best parcels: for the 2019 vintage, a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon (the estate's defining backbone), 40% Cabernet Franc (aromatic freshness and floral lift), 10% Merlot (roundness) and 5% Petit Verdot (depth of colour and spice). The higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and the lower share of Merlot compared to Terra di Monteverro, accentuate the wine's refinement and ageing potential. The grapes grow on clay and limestone soils with eroded stones, on vines planted at a density of 7,575 per hectare in north-south orientation. The estate itself describes the 2019 vintage as 'a new chapter in our history: optimal harvest conditions that have marked its exceptionality and result in a great territorial expression'. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand, with picking dates precisely adapted to each section of each parcel. In the cellar, each lot is vinified separately, in stainless steel and in barrel, with spontaneous fermentations and manual punch-downs. All movement is gravity-driven. The wine then ages for twenty-four months in French oak casks, of which 70% are new — a considerably higher oak treatment than Terra di Monteverro, which the structure and concentration of the cuvée effortlessly integrate. The wine is unfined and unfiltered before bottling. The result is a wine of rare stature. With a perfect Decanter 100/100, alongside 98 points from James Suckling, 97 from Falstaff, Vinum and Veronelli and 19+/20 from Weinwisser, Monteverro 2019 ranks among the absolute peak of the Italian vintage. A wine already accessible to those who appreciate youthful power, but one that will reveal its full splendour only after several years of cellar rest — with a drinking window that comfortably extends well beyond 2040.
