The Tinata 2021 continues the exceptional story of its immediate predecessor. A Rhône-inspired cuvée of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache, named after Christine 'Tina' Weber, the mother of Georg and a great lover of the world's finest Syrahs. The grapes grow around a centuries-old cork oak on one of the estate's most beautiful slopes, bordering the Mediterranean macchia whose lavender, rosemary and thyme echo literally in the wine. For this vintage, the estate was awarded 99 points by Decanter — a whisper away from perfection.
In the glass, a brilliant, deep eggplant colour with purple and pink highlights at the rim. On the nose, an explosion of flowers — violets and lavender leading the way — followed by ripe blueberry jam, thyme, white pepper and a fine undertone of tobacco. On the palate, a soft, velvety entry opens onto a dense and fresh mid-palate with juicy notes of raspberry, evolving into refreshing floral notes of rose and lilac. The body is full yet taut, with fine tannins and the characteristic saline undertone of the Maremma coast. The finish is long and harmonious, with a lingering Mediterranean spice. Monteverro is the leading coastal estate of Julia and Georg Weber in Capalbio, in the southern Maremma. Since 2003 they have been building a reference estate for Tuscan coastal wines, with Bordeaux and Rhône varieties on stony red clay soils, just five kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Tinata is a tribute: the wine bears the nickname of Christine Weber, Georg's mother, and with 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache it is Monteverro's Rhône-oriented answer to its Bordeaux cuvées. The Syrah brings the wine its spicy character and full, structured body; the Grenache lends freshness, elegance and a juicy fruit note. Grapes are harvested entirely by hand, with picking dates within each parcel section adapted to ripeness. In the cellar, an extreme block selection is followed by spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and in barrel, with manual punch-downs and a fully gravity-driven approach. The wine then ages in two complementary vessels: 70% for sixteen months in French barriques (of which 30% are new), and 30% in concrete eggs. The latter preserves aromatic clarity and freshness, while the wood adds texture and complexity. The wine is unfined and unfiltered before bottling. The result is a Tinata of exceptional balance and finesse, comfortably ranking among the estate's finest vintages in terms of tension and aromatic definition. With a Decanter score of 99 points, this is a wine that seamlessly takes over the international acclaim of its predecessor.
