Pinot Grigio from 300 to 500 metres, unoaked and rested on the fine lees. White pear, blossom and citrus, juicy and round, with a saline finish. James Suckling gave this vintage 91 points.
Pale straw yellow, clear and bright. The nose is fine and inviting: white pear first, alongside fresh blossom and a clear citrus lift. Nothing heavy, nothing sweet. On the palate the wine is juicy and round, with a creamy texture it owes to ageing on the fine lees. The acidity is fresh and keeps the wine lively; the higher-lying plots add the tension this variety so often lacks. The finish is dry and lightly saline, with a mineral core that lingers. Serve with shellfish, light pasta dishes, grilled vegetables or as an aperitif.
Kellerei Kurtatsch is a cooperative in the South Tyrolean village of Kurtatsch, founded in 1900 by forty-two growers. Today 190 member families farm 190 hectares of vineyard between 220 and 900 metres. Erwin Carli is the cellar master.
This Pinot Grigio belongs to the SELECTION line, the regional wines of Kurtatsch. The plots lie between 300 and 500 metres, on soils of loam, sand and gravel enriched with dolomite.
Yields are 75 hectolitres per hectare. The grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel, after which the wine rests on the fine lees. No oak is involved.
