Pinot Bianco from the steep Hofstatt site above Kurtatsch, nine months on the fine lees in large oak. Apple, pear and ripe lime, with alpine herbs and a soft texture.
Bright straw yellow with a faint golden sheen. The nose is fine and layered: apple and pear first, alongside ripe lime and lemon balm, with alpine flowers and herbs in the background. On the palate the wine is softer and broader than the regular Pinot Bianco — nine months on the fine lees in large wood give a round, faintly creamy texture without any oak flavour. Lively acidity holds it all in balance and keeps the wine from becoming heavy. Beneath the fruit lies the mineral core of the gravelly dolomite soil with quartz and mica. The finish is long, herbal and fresh. Serve with shellfish, poultry, herb salads or a cheese board.
Kellerei Kurtatsch is a cooperative in the South Tyrolean village of Kurtatsch, founded in 1900 by forty-two growers. Today 190 member families farm 190 hectares of vineyard between 220 and 900 metres. Erwin Carli is the cellar master.
Hofstatt is one of the named sites of Kurtatsch, above the village on steep south-east facing slopes between 500 and 650 metres. The soil is sand and gravel with dolomite, quartz, mica and clay minerals.
Cool katabatic winds create wide day-night swings in the evening. That keeps the aromatics fine and the acidity lively. Yields are held at 55 hectolitres per hectare.
The grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel. Nine months on the fine lees in large oak casks follow.
