Langhe Pinot Nero La Tartufaia 2022 grows at 520 metres on the north-facing slope of Serradenari and ages for some twenty months in French barriques and tonneaux. A Pinot Noir from Barolo country: perfumed, refined and strikingly taut.
Pale ruby, translucent, with a hint of orange at the rim. The nose is markedly floral: rose petal and violet, followed by wild strawberry, sour cherry and an earthy layer of forest floor and mushroom. A light spice of thyme and white pepper runs through it. On the palate the wine is narrowly built but never lean, with silken tannins and a lively acidity that holds the fruit upright. The oak is fully absorbed. The finish is fresh, mineral and persistent. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees.
Giulia Negri is one of the most talked-about names of the new generation of Piedmontese winemakers. She took over the family estate of Serradenari at the age of twenty-four — a property that has been in the family for over a century and a half — and converted the vineyards to organic viticulture. With an uncompromising approach and a keen eye for terroir, she quickly established herself as one of the most respected young producers in the Langhe.
The Pinot Noir occupies the La Tartufaia parcel, at 520 metres, facing north. The soil is Messinian, with a clay-limestone texture that gives the variety both coolness and grip. It is one of the highest Pinot Noir plantings in the Langhe.
Harvesting is done by hand. The grapes ferment spontaneously in truncated-conical wooden vats, with a maceration of around twenty-five days. The wine then ages for some twenty months in French oak barriques and tonneaux of 228 and 350 litres.
