Barolo Marassio 2019 is Giulia Negri's flagship: a selection from less than a hectare at the highest point of Serradenari, at 530 metres. Forty-five days on the skins, thirty months in 25-hectolitre botti, bottled unfiltered.
Dense garnet, more opaque than the other Barolos of the house. The nose is reserved at first and unfolds in layers: blackberry and black cherry, then dried rose and lavender, followed by cedar, sandalwood, cinnamon and a mineral note of crushed stone. On the palate the wine is full and broad, yet the structure is cashmere-like: abundant tannin of extremely fine grain. The acidity is high and keeps everything under tension. A gentle salinity marks the finish, which lingers very long on liquorice and dried flowers. Decant for two to three hours.
Giulia Negri is one of the most talked-about names of the new generation of Piedmontese winemakers. She took over the family estate of Serradenari at the age of twenty-four — a property that has been in the family for over a century and a half — and converted the vineyards to organic viticulture. With an uncompromising approach and a keen eye for terroir, she quickly established herself as one of the most respected young producers in the Langhe.
Marassio is a sub-parcel of less than a hectare at the very highest point of the Serradenari cru, at around 530 metres. The soil is Tortonian, of loam and silt, with a strong presence of limestone and a slightly alkaline pH. The exposure is west. The vines were planted in 2004 and 2006.
The harvest is done by hand and kept separate from the rest of the estate. Fermentation is spontaneous, in truncated-conical wooden vats of sixty hectolitres, with a maceration of around forty-five days. The wine then ages for thirty months in 25-hectolitre botti and is bottled unfiltered.
