  • Tasting note

Light ruby red in the glass, with a subtle sheen befitting this refined, elegant grape. The nose is fruity, with cherry, strawberry and wild berries, backed by Mediterranean herbs and a touch of black pepper and flint. On the palate the wine is dry and spicy, with red fruit carried by rustic but not overpowering tannins. The long finish is mineral and lightly smoky, a reminder of the months the wine spent slowly evolving in large oak vats. Let it breathe briefly before serving, at around 16-18°C, with earthy dishes: grilled meat, hearty stews, mushroom risotto or slow-roasted game birds.

    About this wine

Masseria Setteporte lies on the southwestern slope of Mount Etna, near the Sicilian village of Biancavilla, at an altitude of 600 to 800 metres. The certified organic estate has belonged to the Portale winemaking family for generations and works exclusively with the volcano's native grape varieties. This Nerello Mascalese is a 100% single-varietal bottling — a more serious, longer-aged expression of the grape than the Etna Rosso. The grapes grow on Etna's southern slope, at 650 to 800 metres, from vines over forty years old. After a hand harvest in early October, the wine ferments in stainless steel with a short skin maceration. It then ages for twelve to eighteen months in large, neutral oak vats, which gives the wine its spicy depth without overwhelming the grape's natural freshness.
