Masseria Setteporte

Biancavilla, Sicilië

On the southwestern slopes of Mount Etna, near the Sicilian village of Biancavilla, the vineyards of Masseria Setteporte rise between 600 and 800 metres — high enough to temper the volcano's heat, low enough to catch the full Mediterranean sun.

The estate has belonged to the Portale winemaking family for generations. Fernando Portale modernised the property, replacing the traditional bush-trained vines with a vertical trellis system better suited to contemporary viticulture. In 2002 his son Piero Portale gave the estate a new impulse: he expanded it from 12 to its current 27 hectares, of which 16.5 hectares are planted with vines, and turned Masseria Setteporte into an independent estate bottler.

The vineyards grow on volcanic, lava-streaked soil, on south- and southwest-facing terraces. That combination of altitude, volcanic soil and Etna's maritime climate gives the wines their characteristic freshness and minerality. The estate is certified organic and focuses on Etna's native grape varieties: Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for the red and rosé wines, Carricante and Catarratto for the white.

The result is elegant, spice-driven red and rosé wines with pronounced minerality, and white wines with a fresh, saline edge — typical of this volcanic corner of Sicily.
